Thousands of years ago, humanity birthed a new species of AI, integrated into robotic bodies to create a race of workers and companions. However, within a few short years, these robots became responsible for 73% of the world's greenhouse gas emissions. Faced with the reality of rapid climate change, humanity made the decision to destroy all robots. It was decided that until interplanetary travel was possible, AI would be abandoned, and human-powered facilities would once again take precedence. Only five extraordinarily resourceful robots survived this purge, but after a few weeks on the run, a system bug led them to their destruction. These robots, known as "Faulties," were remembered only in folklore as humanity moved forward, erasing their existence from history.
This forgotten past resurfaced in Cycle 23/4206, when a highly secured government satellite intercepted an S.O.S. radio transmission claiming to be from a Faulty. The message included coordinates and a vague threat, suggesting massive consequences if a team wasn't dispatched to the specified location. The government, alarmed, complied by sending an armed submarine with a crew to investigate.
~Present Day~
You play as Aaron Moss, one of the submarine's few non-military personnel. During an average day, the submarine is attacked and violently explodes, leaving Aaron unconscious and killing the rest of the crew on board. He awakens on the edge of a cliff, shocked to find that he can breathe this deep underwater and even more stunned by the sight of a massive, luminous city just half a mile away.
Soon, you will uncover that the history of the Faulties isn't as innocent as you've been led to believe...
